So How Does an Online Conference Work?

A conference away from home can be a wonderful experience, but it also entails time, travel, and money. It is often not feasible to take an entire family on the road, arrange lodging, pay for meals out and hotel rooms. With a computer and a high-speed Internet connection, it is now possible to participate in a real-time conference from the comfort of your own home!

Almost everyone is familiar with instant messaging and online "net meeting" programs. Now imagine:

  • Logging into a website where you can hear the speaker's voice and watch a live visual presentation (like PowerPointTM or a slide show);
  • Submitting questions to a moderator, who can pass as many as possible on to the speaker--who then answers them audibly without the time-delay of text chatting;
  • Having a forum where you can "meet" your fellow attendees and find families in your own area for further fellowship;
  • Being able to download MP3s and other recorded media from all the conference sessions to listen to over again offline (free to all conference attendees; $12 per session to those who do not participate "live").
This is the new world of online conferencing, and we are very excited to offer this first-of-its-kind event for homemakers. You will be able to hear a keynote session and two "breakout" sessions, then download all of the sessions to listen to any time. You can also make this an opportunity to gather ladies from your church for a day's "mini retreat," providing the opportunity to listen to speakers together and discuss them afterwards. Your time commitment is minimal (three hours on a Saturday), and speakers do not have to leave home or travel; they also log in from their own homes. We see this as a fantastic way to "attend" a conference you might not otherwise be able to enjoy.

Don't have a high-speed (256K+) connection? Consider asking around in your church to see if someone who does would be willing to "host" this event on a Saturday. Check to see if your local library allows extended use of its connected computers for special events. In our "wired" world, it is usually not extremely difficult to find a connection somewhere! Live on the other side of the world and can't participate "live?" Contact Us to find out about downloading the recorded sessions to listen to later (individually or with your own group of friends or church members!). Do note that much of western Europe, including the U.K., is at G.M.T.+0, which means you could participate live from 4pm to 8pm with a one-hour supper break from 6pm to 7pm!

Space is limited to 500 logged in participants for this first online conference, so it will be important to register early. A group discount is available for those who would like to gather friends or church members together for a day of refreshing and encouragement. Here is how the group discount works:

  1. Groups are basically set up on the honor system. CHC has to pay for both bandwidth and server space (to house all recorded sessions and keep up the download account for attendees to access recordings later). To cover these costs, we charge for group attendees, but the cost is less than half of what it would cost to login as an individual attendee. We trust group leaders to get all of their local attendees registered through our site.

  2. Immediate family members do not need to pay individually. Members of the same household can "attend" together as a single unit--only one person needs to register.

  3. For groups of three or more friends, church members, etc., you will need to have one person act as Group Leader. That leader registers as a single attendee at the regular price, selecting the "group leader" option during the sign-up process. Once her registration is completed, she will be able to give her group members a code to register as local participants for the discounted price. Those participants will log in and register individually (or by household) for $15 (using the code to get the discount). Any number over three constitutes a "group" -- so there's really not a minimum. If you want to bring in people outside of your immediate household and only plan to register one computer, you can lead a group!

  4. Group leaders receive the login key for the conference, and they can download all the recorded sessions for free after the conference is over. In addition, group leaders have full permission to burn the sessions onto CD to give out to all those who attended as a part of their group. Again, this basically works as an honor system, and we just trust folks to download for their group members only. Those who don't attend the conference can download the sessions for a cost, since we have to pay for the server space and bandwidth.

  5. The cost for a group leader is the same as the regular conference registration, so if leaders want to ask their group members for a little above and beyond the $15 to cover the cost, that is, of course, something they can do locally. For instance, if a group has fifteen members, the leader could ask each member to contribute $2 toward the "computer fund" to help cover the login. At any rate, group members are able to "attend" locally and participate for less than half the cost of the "Early Bird" registration. Also note that there is no limit on the number of people who attend through the group name. The 500 person limit only applies to the actual number of computers that log in to the conference. There's no need to feel rushed about getting your group registrations in; just make sure the group leader goes ahead and registers to secure a login.

We are very excited about the possibilities of this new medium for real-time encouragement and Titus 2 teaching. It is our hope that this will become a yearly or twice-yearly event, and we also hope to see conferences for men and entire families come online through At-Home Conferences. Thank you for your interest as we continue to develop these opportunities!
